Getting Started: Students

Introduction

Welcome to SUNY Oneonta!

As a student enrolled in classes at the college, you are provided with a SUNY Oneonta user account that gives you access to various services, such as Office 365/Email, computer log-on privileges, the myOneonta portal, and more.

Already activated your account and signed in to the portal? You can find helpful links at the bottom of this article, including links to other useful info for new students and other online resources.

Activating Your Account

You should have received an email to the address you originally applied with from helpme@oneonta.edu with the subject line "New student user account created for <YourLastNameHere>, <YourFirstNameHere>" detailing how to claim your user account. In it will be your username and your Oneonta ID number (starting with A0).

You'll use the information provided in this email to activate your account on our User Account Maintenance page (www.oneonta.edu/useraccount).

To activate your account:

  1. Begin by going to our Oneonta User Account Maintenance page at: www.oneonta.edu/useraccount
  2. Select the “Activate User Account (if you’ve never logged in before)” option
  3. Enter your Oneonta ID, your Username, and your date of birth:

SUNY Oneonta User Account Maintenance page with the "Activate User Account (if you've never logged in)" drop down box opened. There are fields to provide your Username, Oneonta ID, and Birthday.

Remember to enter in the username provided in your new student account email, NOT an external email address or a username you make up on your own. Also, make sure you type in this information manually—copying and pasting it from another source occasionally pulls hidden characters or spaces that can cause errors!

  4. Enter your new password:

Password setting portion of the account activation process. There is a box to set your password, and one below it for confirming the password that you've set. Passwords must be 12 characters long, no spaces. There are also links to our Technology Acceptable Use Policy and our IT Security Page.

Your password should be a minimum of 12 characters long and not include your name, username, date of birth, or commonly used password strings like "password1234."

  5. After your account is set up, be sure to visit the "Update Account Recovery Options" section on the Oneonta User Account Maintenance page to set up your identity verification information in case you forget your password.

IMPORTANT: Please complete this step immediately after setting your account password! If you do not and don't remember your password, you will not be able to reset it on your own. You will need to contact the Service Desk so that we can verify your information and reset it for you.

SUNY Oneonta User Account Maintenance page with the "Update Account Recovery Options" box opened. Go here to set up your multifactor authentication settings after establishing your password.

Logging in to myOneonta

After activating your account and setting your identity verification information, you can then log in to our myOneonta portal.

  1. Begin by going to: my.oneonta.edu

Login page at my.oneonta.edu. There is a sign in box centered asking for your email username at oneonta dot edu. The background image is of Hunt Union. Background text is justified left and reads: "We nurture a community where students grow intellectually, thrive socially, live purposefully."

You'll see a login page like the above where you'll enter the username you previously activated with '@oneonta.edu' added to the end followed by the password you created during the account activation process:

Sign in dialogue box on my.oneonta.edu with the username ATREP411 at oneonta dot edu entered. There are additional options at the bottom of the box for resetting your password and information for contacting ITServices.

  2. If you didn't establish your multifactor authentication (MFA) information on the "Update Account Recovery Options" section on the Oneonta User Account Maintenance page, you'll be prompted with a page that says "More information required" that will allow you to set a phone number and an alternate email address:

Login box that reads "More information required. Your organization needs more information to keep your account secure." A link to "Use a different account" is present.

Please note: If you anticipate traveling overseas and do not have an international plan that will enable you to receive SMS/text messages while abroad, we recommend downloading, installing, and registering the Microsoft Authenticator application as a multifactor authentication option: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/mobile-authenticator-app

This application can provide you with MFA login codes via an internet connection in the event you are unable to receive SMS/text messages.

  3. After that's finished, you'll be on your myOneonta portal. There, you can find helpful cards with links to things like Outlook email, Brightspace, and much more!

my.oneonta.edu portal home page. Various cards are displayed for things like Oneonta Email, Brightspace Courses, Campus Connection, GET, and more. Profile options are at the top-right, while a menu with three horizontal bars is next to the SUNY Oneonta logo at top-left.
